What is "Office"?
The “office" was defined as commuting to a cubicle farm from 9-5 with managers monitoring our works. That rigid "work only happens under supervision" construct seems outdated compared to today's standards. Now, offices can be anywhere - in our bedroom, coffee shop, co-working space, or even the beach. Remote work and mobile technology have separated where we work from physical oversight.
However, in-person collisions and the social bonds of a traditional office still prove invaluable despite virtual lunch and remote fun events. So modern offices run the gamut – either fully distributed to attract talent who thrive on autonomy, or maintaining centralized hubs prioritizing culture and collaboration.
The definition of the office has evolved from a fixed space to anywhere work happens and value is created. It's become customized to people's working styles – whether they link productivity to environment and supervision, or function best with freedom and trust. One certainty is the old-fashioned concept of office has transformed. I believe today's office is defined by the talent that inhabits it to drive impact from wherever they choose.
